What a seed phrase is
When you set up a self-custody wallet, it generates a seed phrase — usually 12 or 24 ordinary words in a fixed order. Why it matters
The seed phrase cuts both ways. If you lose it and also lose access to your device, your funds are gone for good — no company can reset it. And anyone who gets hold of it can move all your assets. That is why protecting the seed phrase is the single most important habit in self-custody.
How to store it safely
- Write it offline. On paper or, better, a fireproof and waterproof metal backup. - Keep multiple copies in separate, secure places. - Keep it private — only you should ever see it.
Never do this
- Never screenshot it or store it in the cloud, notes apps, or chats. - Never type it into a website or share it with "support." - Never enter it anywhere except your wallet's own recovery screen.
